The pigeons can’t get to the feed even though one enterprising dove has figured out if he stands on the top of a tube, cranes his neck over the side, he can get to the feed from the top holes. Wonder what he’ll think when the seed goes down. My only problem now is I think Dad “stole” all my finches. Huh – how do you like that!?

Oh well, he’s got a new hobby – bird watching. One person found this helpful. I agree that this product is poorly made, not worth the price. LIke others say, it’s a good idea but poorly constructed.

I would like to make some suggestions on how to overcome some of these problems. In order to keep the tubes from moving, place a tab of supper glue at the end of each perch next to the perch holes. The tubes can still be filled from the top with the perches locked in place. One of the perches broke. By connecting two chopsticks together made a perfect replacement. The caps on the bottom do not hold. By placing the bottom caps above the bottom three perch holes, placing a perch in those holes will solve this problem.

Do not glue this perch, the bottom perch needs to be removed to clean the tubes. All tube bird feeders will get hard at the bottom from the rain. By removing the bottom purch this will allow you to clean that area. Like all finch feeders the holes are small so that larger birds will not eat the expensive food required by finches.

Now for the squirrel problem. They like to investcate anything new. By placing the feeder on a strong flexible branch, adding a small bungee chord creates a problem for them Within two days they gave up. Birds are different, they don’t like changes. I am an avid bird watcher and amateur photographer and I got this feeder in January Recently I was able to get a photo of this feeder filled with 24 Goldfinches,with a 25th one trying to find a spot to perch. Since I had so many other Goldfinches in my yard at the time, I started to wonder what it would be like to hang a second feeder alongside the first, and get a photo with all 48 perches filled.

I ordered my second feeder a couple of weeks ago. So far I’ve counted 32 Goldfinches at the two feeders, but again, there were so many other Goldfinches in the yard at the time that I’m SURE I’ll get my shot with all 48 perches filled.

The Goldfinches just love this feeder and it’s fun to watch them all coming in to it. I would recommend this feeder to anyone who loves to watch birds. The ONLY problem I have with this feeder is that the top feeding port is very close to the top of the feeder. I top this feeder off every day before I put it out, and sometimes go out mid-day to top it off again because as the birds eat the seeds, the level goes down quickly and the top perches don’t get filled because there is no food there for the birds.

The holes for the rods won the middle tube were not lined up so there was no way to get the tubes straight. See photo. There are 36 holes where the rods come through. This leads me to the last problem: The thistle seed holes where the birds eat are small enough that they don’t leak but each rod has 6 holes that are larger than the rod that passes through, and since most of those holes do not have rubber gaskets every time it rains they leak. Moisture drips down through the thistle seed and 2 days later you have a lump of moldy seed.

Of course, to get that cleaned out means all the seed has to be trashed. Yes, that is mold in the photo and that seed was 6 days old, and thrown out. I ended up taking out the middle tube and using 2 of the scarce gaskets to hold it in the center of my shepherd’s hook feeder stand.

I’m in the Pacific Northwest so as soon as it rains again feeder will have to be taken down. One person found this helpful. I have owned several 3 tube finch feeders in the past and this one is way superior to any of them. The tubes are of much heaver material and the caps and perches are made of metal not plastic as others are. This feeder should hold up very well. I highly recommend anyone to put this feeder on top of your list. Update: Many of the reviews of this product should be removed.

They are too old and certainly do not reflect the great product that I recently received. This feeder has thick plastic tubes and all of rest is assembled with red steel caps and steel perches. Disregard the complaints about the cheaply made plastic for at least the one I received is excellent in quality. The description of this product needs to be changed because the feeder has changed.

The old reviews sheds a dim light on the manufacturer Songbird Essentials. However the manufacturers web site is describing the cheaper all plastic model, so I don’t know what gives. Just buy it.
