The ocean gets choppy, making movement on jetskis and boats more of a chore. Tonal shifts like this are hard to find in modern multiplayer games.

At the less enjoyable, less ambitious end of the Levolution spectrum is Golmud Railway, a vehicle-friendly Chinese plain. The dynamic element here is a small, slow-moving train that happens to be one of the six capture points. This might’ve been a nice design on paper, but the train is easily intercepted and implemented in a way that has almost no strategic value. A lonely caboose putting along in the middle of a tank war feels out of place.

Good and not-good gimmicks aside, the layout and look of BF4’s maps is thoroughly great, great enough in a few cases to stand alongside Wake Island and Caspian Border as some of Battlefield’s all-time best. Hainan Resort is my favorite of the 10, a bowl-shaped tropical bay overlooked by a hotel. LAVs inevitably stack up in the courtyard at the lip of this resort, generating some excellent cat-and-mouse between armor and engineers while gunboats harass from the shore.

Naval combat is more abundant in BF4, expressed in maps like Flood Zone, where you fight on the connected rooftops of apartments that are submerged in 50 feet of swimmable water. And Golmud Railway, while it’s slightly a drag in Conquest, is fantastic in Rush, which shrinks the map to a concentrated, satisfying attack-and-defend format–my team had to earn every capture point against defenders who continually had the high ground.

All maps also benefit from the increase in squad size from four to five, which does a little to mitigate the long traversal times present in some BF3 maps and modes. The sour exception to the well-designed map pool is Operation Locker, a flat, bottlenecky industrial bunker. Even with just 28 players, an Obliteration round on Locker that I played devolved into an embarrassing minute meat-grinder. Small crowds would gather at meter-wide tunnels, with players blocking each other and dying in piles.

Both teams were groaning in text chat up until the end. BF4’s campaign is a better appetizer than BF3’s dismally generic offering, although it’s still a single-player-by-numbers execution. The action is straightforward, never deviating from the whack-a-mole game of plunking down pop-up targets in the form of guards, punctuated by cutscenes and the occasional helicopter or tank kill. It’s bland, mildly exciting, and so tropey that it includes a level where you lead a prison breakout alongside a Russian inmate, as seen previously in Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Love the Battlefield series, and had so much fun playing this when the game first released on the Playstation 3, that I thought I’d give it another go on PC.

There are still plenty of people playing Battlefield 4 that one can easily find servers with enough players to fill matches. The game runs pretty well, especially on modern computers with adequate specs. Most if not all of the bugs and shortcomings this game had in the beginning have all been fixed for the most part.

And with all of the content like maps, weapons, tools now available make for a great experience. One of the only downsides I am mildy annoyed with is that the game requires players to utilize a separate launcher to play the game.

This means that on top of having to also use EA’s launcher service Origin, one also needs to use a seperate launcher known as Battlelog. It’s a slight inconvenience at best, and an annoyance that takes up a bit more of a computer’s resources at worse when playing Battlefield 4. Games like Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline, and Battlefield 1 all need Battlelog to be able to play. The newest game, Battlefield V 5 , does not require the service.

Also, the extra content like DLC maps have regularly become free or are at very low prices that it shouldn’t be an issue for new players, and I don’t doubt they’ll become free again. All in all this is still a great game that has fixed most of not all of its majors flaws and bugs from early on, and there are still a good number of players active that can fill numerous game lobbies. The DLC maps might be an issue for new players, so getting the Premium version might be more preferable and recommended instead, when it goes on sale again of course.

By now you should be aware of the Battlefield franchise, as it has been around for many years and has a very large following. You can still pick this up on Amazon in either downloadable format which is what I chose or the DVD and the price should have decreased enough to make it worthwhile.

In terms of servers available, there are a lot still running meaning this game is not dying out. Go buy it soldier, you know you want too! With that said; I can, as a gamer, give my overall opinion of the game. Graphics: Intense! I believe that the gameplay has better overall textures than the cinematics. Being a hardcore FPS gamer, I really enjoy this game. Overall, this game is a blast! Weapon unlocks are no longer based on level or kit, but now based on use.

Use LMR’s to unlock them, leveling up your Support kit will no longer unlock them for you. No longer stuck only being able to use either a health pack or ammo pack, now you can switch them out entirely! There’s more than 1 grenade type now! Every level in the vanilla game has a player activated levolution. Most of them epic, some of them just cool to see, but all of them change the environment. The action is fast and fun! Overall this game is far superior to BF3, and once DICE works out the bugs this game will finally live up to its potential and suck the remaining hours of my life away, happily!

Makes CoDgraphics look like Donkey Kong. Its sad that so many fanboys came on here early – before the bugs and kinks were worked out – and gave all of the negative reviews that they did. Out of all the current multiplayer games available, this one is by far the best. Others have complained that the “Campaign” mode as lame or not to their satisfaction. I have no complaints. I am finding Campaign to be challenging, fun, realistic, and satisfying.

While CoD is a great series, Battlefield is the true king of the genre. As someone who has rarely played in Massive Multiplayer modes I am just now learning how everything works. This means I get killed fairly fast. But I see the potential the game has once a player gets comfortable with it. The graphics engine is impressive. Whereas Crysis is beautiful, there is a sense that the world that you are in does not reflect the real world.
