Moving to today, Capture One does way more complex calculations than Lightroom, so it puts more stress on the hardware. That awesome colour and detail rendering of C1 has a price to be paid by Hardware. It always was a hardware hog, it never was the fastest, but always had this one of a kind output quality. Indeed, it was the speed of editing advantage which pulled me from Lightroom to C1.

My Lightroom 4 on the same hardware was sluggish as hell. You may check the settings on your machine. Maybe for some reason the hardware acceleration wasn’t turned on. C1 utilises the recourses of the grafic card a lot.

I do not question that this is a useful update. However, C1 is in urgent need for further development in two areas: noise reduction and sharpening. I agree. I have just been trying the latest version out on low light pictures from the disco at the reception at my daughter’s wedding last week. The noise reduction is pathetic, even at highest levels. Lightroom, which is still not very good compared to the market leaders, is far better. DXO6 knocks it into a cocked hat.

I find the cropping, rotating and keystone adjustments pretty clunky to work with. Still can’t get used to it after 2 years of exclusive use. Still waiting for HSL curves. It’s annoying that I can’t e. As with last year’s version most of the new stuff doesn’t seem great for a large upgrade cost, but the Smart Adjustments look interesting, if they work well I’s still like the noise reduction to be thrown away and replaced with something better, and the focus mask sped up so it’s actually usable when culling, which IMHO would be amazing and was one of the reasons I originally got C1P.

The lack of new good features for my use and workflow, and the on-going non competitive price jumps let me skip this years upgrade. It’s a bit of an improvement over last year, were the headline features were Pano and HDR tools that weren’t as good as stand-alone ones people seriously interested in those things probably already had I certainly did.

It is so fast before they decide to roll out a new version for money. That’s merely much for an upgrade. I’m disappointed that C1 does not support DxO dng files. I have to use an additional app to convert the files to tiff in order to import them into C1.

A lot of photographers are using DxO as their first -level photo processing as it is the best for clearing noise and de-mosaicing, and outputs the files as dng format.

Converting these files to bit tiff for C1 adds an unwanted chunk of time to my workflow. Thanks for that. I just checked again and it works. That’s a relief. It does. I “pre-process” raw though Dxo and do the final stage in C1. Works flawlessly. When I first got C1 I thought its perpetual license would be like Davinci Resolve’s perpetual license.

Now I feel I should have just spent that money on Adobe’s subscription instead. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Resolve only has perpetual license if you bought their license dongle. They discontinued it once they switched to the subscription model. You pay one time for Resolve Studio and get all updates forever.

The only subscription is for the cloud storage thing that, as far as I know is only relevant if you have a big studio with multiple people working on the same project at the same time. I sure hope so. Resolve is the oddity offering free upgrades – their major reason? NO other software company is like that NOR unless with other reason – such as getting you to purchase its hardware should be.

When I first tested Capture One back in to see if I was interested in using it, I imported around 50 images into a catalog and processed them, and I was instantly amazed by the amount of detail that I saw in my images. I had processed it high-key in Lightroom originally, but I was simply not aware that there was that much detail in the feathers when I saw my original photo. The moment I saw this, I realized that I had to spend more time looking at what Capture One Pro could do for my photography.

The next reason is that I am able to create quality black and white images without using a plugin or other software. In Capture One Pro though, I am able to convert to black and white with the control that I want, and, in true form, the image quality that I have become accustomed to. The tonal range is excellent, and when necessary, I can easily create additional masks to modify things like the foreground rocks in this image with one mask and add a second mask to adjust the sky.

Of course, generic adjustments to the entire image are still possible with the background layer. I am also a huge fan of the highly customizable user interface of Capture One Pro.

For example, the Black and White Tool Tab that comes with Capture One Pro contains the film grain tool, for adding artistic grain to images, but because I never use that, I simply remove it from the Tool Tab. I do use Layers a lot though, especially on my black and white photos, so I added that to my Black and White Tool Tab, along with the High Dynamic Range sliders, which I also use a lot.

The other thing that I love is that pretty much all of the edits you can make to an image can be applied just to specific layers, including masks, as well as generically to the entire image. The Vignette tool also works on the entire image or the crop, depending on your selection, but as you can see from this screenshot, there is a paint-brush icon next to all of the other tool headers.

This indicates that the adjustments that you make with that tool can be applied to layers. These icons become visible when you select a layer in the Layers tool. I also love to work in color, and Capture One Pro gives me complete control over the color in my images, via tools such as the Advanced Color Editor.

Here I took a screenshot of the same image showing the original raw photo, but also showing the processed image with the mask that I created to enhance the blue in the ice, and the final processed image. You can move the vertical bar separating the two views as well. On the left side, I have three views, and on the right side, I have the final processed image. I created the mask by selecting the color with the color picker from the Advanced Color Editor, and then right-clicking the ellipsis in the top-right of the Color Editor and then selected Create Masked Layer from Selection.
